100% of Philadelphia Orchestra Musicians Give to Annual Fund, Signifying Commitment to the Organization’s Future

August 18, 2017

Total Musician Giving for 2016-17 Fiscal Year Reaches an Unprecedented $74,000

(Philadelphia, August 18, 2017)—The Philadelphia Orchestra Musicians (POM) have voted to make a substantial donation to the Orchestra's annual fund. This gift, representing 100% participation, grew out of a series of meetings between Musicians, Administration, and the Board, aimed at strengthening mutual relationships following the contract negotiations of 2016. In light of the progress achieved at these meetings, the Musicians are proud to make this gesture of goodwill, showing the wider community that all parties are working together in unity for the welfare of the Orchestra. Musicians have donated a total of $74,000 during the 2016-17 fiscal year.

“On behalf of the Board of The Philadelphia Orchestra, we are delighted to see such a unified commitment from the Musicians,” said Board of Directors Chairman Richard B. Worley. “This gift underscores the collective progress we have made for the greater good of the organization and helps to support our operational fundraising.”

“More than ever before, the Musicians, Administration, and the Board are coming together to engage in meaningful dialogue,” said Orchestra President and CEO Allison Vulgamore. “It is heartening to watch us grow and evolve together. This gift is a beautiful example of the Musicians’ dedication to the Orchestra’s vitality, and it is emblematic of our shared commitment to a bright future.”

"It is important for the Musicians of the Orchestra to show that we are partners with our Board and supporters in donating to the annual fund to ensure the robust future of The Philadelphia Orchestra for years to come," said William Polk, chairman of The Philadelphia Orchestra Members’ Committee.

In May, Orchestra Board member Bob Rechnitz and his wife Joan pledged a $500,000 challenge grant to be matched in new, increased, or additional gifts from The Philadelphia Orchestra’s Board of Directors, Council of Emeritus Directors, Musicians, and staff before the end of the fiscal year on August 31, 2017. In addition, a second $500,000 challenge grant to support the Annual Fund is also in place to match donors giving new or additional gifts before the close of the fiscal year.

“It is transformational to have such tremendous support and extraordinary leadership from Bob and Joan Rechnitz,” said Vulgamore. “Their generous contribution enables the Orchestra to thrive as we advance our commitment to exceptional performances, audience development, cultural diplomacy, and community service.”
